Spring is on its way but according to new research out today sunshine is not enough to lift the population’s spirits with three quarters (74 per cent) of UK workers admitting they feel stressed on a daily basis.

Fortunately the antidote is close to hand with 70 per cent saying that escaping from the confines of our cities makes them feel instantly relaxed.

In response, the National Trust is giving everyone in the country a bonus with a free weekend on 20 – 21 March that gives everyone the opportunity to visit the great outdoors.

The study also found that when it comes to lowering stress levels our senses are key, with 72 per cent of those surveyed claiming that seeing the sea was the quickest and most effective stress reliever. This was followed closely by a walk in the countryside (66 per cent), contact with fresh air (59 per cent) and the sand between our toes (33 per cent).
Natural elements relieve stress
With the study revealing that contact with the natural elements can help significantly reduce stress, the National Trust has also come up with the ultimate solution for the office-bound – National Trust fresh air is being offered to stressed-out city workers in London.

The fresh air has been captured from rural and coastal locations across the country – including the lake-side scent of Townend on the shores of Lake Windermere in Cumbria, the grass filled blend at Stourhead, Wiltshire and the woodland aroma of Box Hill, Surrey.

Andrew McLaughlin, Head of Communications at the National Trust comments;

‘With most of us living in an urban environment and having little time to escape to the great outdoors we thought it was about time the National Trust shared just a fraction of our copious amounts of fresh air with the nation’.

Free entry to properties

For those people that are unable to get their hands on these jars of fresh air, the National Trust is also giving everyone in the country a bonus by opening their doors for free on the weekend of 20 – 21 March 2010. Hundreds of special places from castles, windmills and gardens will be opening for free and countryside and coastal car parks cared for by the Trust will also be free of charge over the weekend.

A triangular “exit hole” for the flatus to be expelled is cut from the back of the air-tight underwear, near the bottom. This “exit hole” is covered with a “pocket” made of ordinary porous fabric sewn over the “exit hole”. This unique design forces all expelled gas (flatus) out through the “pocket”.

Inside the “pocket” is a high-functioning, replaceable filter – the core of the technology. This multi-layered filter is made in a sandwich-style, and begins with the two outer layers of wool felt. The second two layers are made of non-woven polypropylene and spun glass materials. In the center of the filter is a single layer of activated carbon.

The filter is then covered with soft ordinary material to allow for easy replacement in or out of the pocket. Banana Bread Beer

According to Howtopedia, which is like Wikipedia without the citations (perhaps not the best source for launching a home bootlegging business), banana beer is made using the fermented juices of sorghum and, if you haven’t guessed it by now, bananas. “Come, Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana / Daylight come and me wanna go home” (where I won’t be sipping on this).

Tomato Beer

No, this isn’t simply adding tomato juice to a beer at the bar; Tomato Bibere is brewed from tomatoes and hops by Japan’s Echigo Beer Co.

The idea came from Isamu Waki, a pub owner in Tokyo who had been asking brewers for a tomato beer for years. Echigo’s president Hirofumi Koda finally acted on the suggestion a few years ago inspired by Waki’s enthusiasm.

But exotic beers were nothing new to Koda’s company as it had previously produced beers brewed with pears, rice, and green tea.

The process to arrive at a tasty and healthy tomato beer was a difficult one, says Koda, who doesn’t actually like tomatoes. Many adjustments were made during the experimentation, including playing with the amount of tomatoes and sugar, to achieve the final product.

And now the Japanese can enjoy their tomatoes and beer together.

Pizza Beer

Tom and Athena Seefurth of Campton Township, Illinois, USA claims that Mamma Mia Pizza Beer is the world’s first culinary beer. Totally made from a variety of vegetables, this beer carries a strong aroma of Italian spices.

Tom says… “The Margarita pizza is put into the mash & steeped like a tea bag. A whole wheat crust made with water, flour & yeast is topped with tomato, oregano, basil & garlic. The essence of the pizza spices is washed off with hot water and filtered into a brewpot, where it is boiled for a long, long time. During the process, we add hops & spices in a cheesecloth type bag & filter the cooled liquid into a fermentation vessel. (big glass 6 gallon water jug). After a week or two, the beer is good to go. Keg it or bottle it”

A hotel in the French town of Nantes is offering the chance for people to become a hamster.

For 99 euros ($158) a night, you can eat hamster grain, run in a giant wheel, sleep in hay stacks in what is called the Hamster Villa.

Maud and Sebastien are the first ones to experience how hamsters live, not afraid at the thought of sleeping in hay or feeding on a hamster fountain and special grain.

It is a unique experience and, the guests say, just something different.

“To become a hamster, eat seeds, change our way of life… come out of our daily routine,” Maud and Sebastien said.

The owners, Frederic Tabary and Yann Falquerho, run a company which rents out unusual and bizarre places.

“The hamster in the world of children is that little cuddly animal. Often, the adults who come here have wanted or did have hamsters when they were small,” Mr Falquerho said, dressed as a hamster.

However, the price is soon to go up as today’s hamsters need, according to the owners, Wifi and a giant TV screen.

An ancient Egyptian bust on display at the Field Museum in Chicago has been the focus of interest since the star’s death as visitors double-take at the eerie similarities between the 3,000 year old statue and the singer.

The limestone statue — which depicts an unidentified woman — went on display at the museum in 1988 and was carved during the New Kingdom Period, dating from between 1550 BC to 1050 BC.

Like Jackson’s surgically-altered face, the carving has a distinct, upturned nose and rounded eyes.

And like Jackson — if rumors of the singer’s prosthesis are to be believed — the statue’s nose has partially disintegrated.

Museum curator Jim Phillips said staff had been “inundated” with inquiries from Jackson fans since the star’s similarities to the bust were pointed out in a recent newspaper article.

“We’ve had people coming to the museum and asking ‘Where’s Michael Jackson?’ So we have to tell them that he’s not here, but there is a bust that looks a lot like him,” Phillips told AFP.

Phillips said while it is doubtful that Jackson’s physical startling image may have been inspired by the statue — the singer was not believed to have visited the museum — the resemblance between the two is undeniable.

“I have to admit it, there are a number of very striking similarities,” Phillips said. “I don’t follow all the permutations of Michael Jackson’s physical appearance, but they do look a lot alike.”

Jackson, 50, died of a cardiac arrest at his home in Los Angeles on June 25.
